Well articulated Alon. I very much agree with Jerry Maguire and your take on it. A partnership is much more effective when each side brings different qualities to the table.

Alon,

This is a great topic! I believe that many companies have failed due to the fact that the founders did not look at the venture as a partnership and relegated control to one person and one person only. It is in my experience (:-)) that when the founders of a startup are not equal, then the startup will fail.

The problem, aside from equity and money - which always add a layer of complexity, is that the founders usually are the ones that work their ass off for the good of the company but when they are not equal, problems start to occur across the entire company. We are humans, afterall, and one of the human thirsts is for recognition and for power.

This is true across many types of companies and not just startups. I recently joined a company as a VP. On my first day on the job, the CEO had a meeting between him and the other two VPs in the company and announced that we are all equal. Equal in the sense that major company decisions are to never be made in a vaccum and that these types of decisions are made together.

When it comes down to it, I truly believe that a good partnership will only help a company. It never guarantees success, but it does guarantee a good working environment and a continuing relationship that will only help the company.

I do have a question for you, though. Who in your household is the president? :-)
